The ANSI/ISEA 107 standard doesn't ban decoration on high-visibility apparel. It sets minimum amounts of background material (the bright orange or yellow) and retroreflective material (the silver tape) a garment needs to hold its class rating, Class 2 or Class 3 for most road and job-site work. A logo becomes a problem when it covers or interrupts the tape, or when it eats so much background fabric that the garment drops below the required area for its class. ANSI's own explainer on the 2020 revision is the most current plain-language source if you want to read the standard yourself instead of taking a print shop's word for it.

In practice, that means a chest logo and a back logo both fit fine on a standard Class 2 vest or shirt as long as neither one crosses the horizontal or vertical tape. The class you need changes how much room you have to work with. Class 2 covers most general site work and jobs off the roadway shoulder. DTF is the wrong call for the original crew order, though. It's priced per shirt with no real volume discount, so a 12 or 20 shirt order comes out cheaper through screen printing almost every time. Save DTF and DTG work for the one-off reorder, not the initial batch.

Placement that keeps you compliant

A few rules of thumb that keep a design both legible and legal:

  • Chest logos stay above or below the horizontal tape, never crossing it.
  • Back designs sit in the yoke area above the top horizontal strip, not layered over any tape.
  • Sleeve logos are the safest bet for a second placement since sleeves usually carry less required tape coverage.
  • Keep single logos under about 16 square inches on a Class 2 garment. Bigger logos start eating into background material fast, especially on smaller sizes.
